Research

SMART FIRES brings together four key areas of expertise:

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

Uses advanced AI/ML methods to process fire‑related data and generate predictive fire‑behavior insights.

Fire & Smoke Science

Advances understanding of fire radiative energy, emissions, and their impacts on air quality.

Smart Optical Sensors

Develops ground‑based and UAS‑mounted optical sensors with onboard AI/ML for real‑time fire and smoke measurement.

Social Psychology, Economics, & Ethics

Examines how people interpret information, build trust, and make decisions about prescribed fire.

At the core of this program is the development of advanced mobile optical sensing technologies equipped with embedded computing and AI. These tools will rapidly collect and analyze data to support safer, more effective use of prescribed fire.

SMART FIRES will also deliver easy-to-understand data dashboards and model outputs that help individuals, land managers, and communities make informed decisions about fire and smoke risks. Through this work, the project will produce scientifically grounded strategies for choosing when and where to apply prescribed fire in ways that maximize benefits and reduce the threat of severe wildfires and harmful smoke.
